Les Misérables
by Claude-Michel Schönberg, Alain Boublil, and Jean-Marc Natel
In my design for the infamous musical Les Misérables, I wanted to emphasize the idea of transformation. To me, nearly all of Les Mis’ various characters and interweaving plots are stories of becoming something new. From the revolution hoping to reshape the country to the redemption of a criminal, the theme of change is always present. I wanted to show this in my set with the repeating theme of archways, which I see as places of transition, a border between what was and what will be. Shown here are my designs for selected scenes, including the Rue Plumet garden where Marius and Cosette meet, the Barricade, and the bridge for Javert’s suicide. This design was done in Set 3 in 2023.
