Randy’s Dandy Coaster Castle
by Alexander Perez
Randy’s Dandy Coaster Castle is a comedy, albeit a somewhat depressing one, about the lives of struggling coworkers having the life sucked out of them by an insultingly low-paying job. It is set in a run-down, unprofitable amusement park in Panama City.
I was the lead scenic designer on this piece. This production was in a black box theater with an audience of 46. The set consists of a ‘trailer’ platform, containing an office and a breakroom space, and a ring toss booth. During the Graviton scenes, a control podium and some temporary fence pieces are brought in front of the ring toss. The intention was for this set to feel incredibly immersive, which we accomplished by placing carnival lights around the whole room, enclosing the seating in temporary fencing, and arranging the set so that the audience had to walk between the trailer and ring toss to get to their seats. I had a lot of fun adding details like cracked concrete, mildewy lattice, and rickety break room furniture pieces to show how outdated and poorly maintained this space is.
