Touch(ed)
by Bess Wohl
Touch(ed) features a woman named Kay, whose sister Emma has been in a mental hospital for years. It is primarily set in a cabin by a lake, a retreat rented by Kay and her boyfriend Billy as a space to reconnect with Emma, believing some fresh air and time outside of the hospital will do her good. Emotions fluctuate throughout this show as characters deal with the highs and lows of each individual’s mental health.
I was the lead scenic designer on this piece. It took place in a 49-seat black box theater. This design is intended to support the play’s exploration of perception and reality. The items that the characters interact with will be fully realistic, but that realism dissolves the further you get from the people. The sofa is real, the ceiling is implied by some beams hanging in the void, and everything beyond the walls of the house is entirely abstract, with lighting booms outside the windows standing in for trees.
